When it comes time to take a DNA test, most individuals care most about accuracy when choosing a DNA lab. There is a misconception among most that the only way to collect a DNA profile is with a blood sample. This simply is not true. Swab DNA testing is a relatively new technology that allows laboratories to extract DNA from skin cells obtained from a swab. There are a variety of reasons why a swab DNA test is preferable to a blood DNA test.
First, DNA collection from a cheek swab is completely painless. The collector simply scrapes the inside of the participant’s cheek in and up and down and rotating motion using what looks like a long Q-tip. Epithelial cells are gathered on the swab. These cells contain the same DNA found in whole blood. In contrast to the cheek swab, blood collection can be painful and involves the use of a needle. Most individuals do not like needles and are happy feels that the extraction of DNA with a cotton swab of the cheek can be performed without pain.
The needles are invasive, while auctions do. Normally, the collector for collection of blood, a certified phlebotomist. The cost of hiring a phlebotomist is much greater than the formation of a collector to collect the DNA with a swab on the cheek. This translation costs for the customer. Any process that affects the skin is pierced provides over the risk of a non-invasive procedure. Smears does not mean that the interruption ofskin, and the DNA from a swab is exactly the same as DNA from blood.
The third reason to choose a swab over blood when collecting a DNA sample is because swabs are easier to transport. The DNA sample must be transported from the collection site to the DNA lab for testing. Shipping companies like FedEx and UPS have strict regulations covering the transportation of blood. Swabs on the other hand are transported easily in envelopes. You do not need to keep them at a certain temperature or worry about them being held up in transport.
Still, it is often difficult to convince skeptics that swab DNA is as accurate as blood DNA is. I can assure you that, when collected properly, epithelial cells are just as accurate as blood. Please notice I said when collected properly . Make sure that when you choose a DNA lab that the individual performing the swab collection has been properly trained to collect <b > Samples of DNA. If you choose a kit home, so be sure to follow the instructions provided by the laboratory of DNA.
Here are some rules that go in the collection of DNA samples:
Always wear gloves
Change gloves between sampling
